If you’ve searched “can I do the HPT online at home”, you’ve probably seen confusing answers. Some states let you, some don’t, and plenty of websites blur the line between the real test and practice tests. Here’s exactly how it works in NSW as of 2026.

The short answer

No — the real NSW Hazard Perception Test must be taken in person at a Service NSW centre. You’ll sit at a touchscreen terminal, watch 15 short video clips (plus 2 practice clips), and touch the screen at the moment you’d slow down, overtake, or turn. Your result is given immediately.

There is currently no option to sit the official NSW HPT from home, on your own computer, or on your phone.

Why the confusion? Victoria does it differently

If a friend in Melbourne told you they did their hazard perception test on the couch, they weren’t lying. VicRoads allows Victorian learners to take their HPT online from home, with the first attempt free. That’s a Victoria-only arrangement — Transport for NSW has not adopted it, and NSW learners still need to attend a service centre.

When you see “do the hazard perception test online”, check which state the page is talking about before you get your hopes up.

What you CAN do from home: practice

While the real test is centre-only, all of your preparation can happen at home:

Booking the real test (when you’re ready)

1. Check you’re eligible: under 25s must have held their learner licence for at least 10 months; 25 and over can sit it any time.
2. Book online through Service NSW or at a centre — the fee is $58 per attempt (from 1 July 2026).
3. Bring your learner licence and proof of identity on the day.
4. Pass, and you have 15 months to pass your practical Driving Test before the HPT expires.
