How much does the NSW Hazard Perception Test cost in 2026?
The HPT costs $58 per attempt from 1 July 2026, paid when you book through Service NSW. You pay the fee again for each retake. (Many websites still list the old $49 or $57 fees — always check the official Transport for NSW fees page for the current amount.)
How many video clips are in the NSW HPT?
The test has 15 short video clips, plus 2 practice clips before the test begins that don't count towards your result. Each clip is filmed from the driver's point of view, and you touch the screen when you would slow down, overtake, or turn.
What score do you need to pass the HPT in NSW?
Transport for NSW doesn't publish a numeric pass mark. You need to respond to enough hazards within the correct time windows across the 15 clips. Websites quoting exact pass scores (like 44/75 or 40%) are describing older formats or guessing — focus on responding at the right moment in every clip rather than chasing a number.
Can I take the NSW HPT online at home?

When can I take the HPT?
If you're under 25, you must have held your NSW learner licence for at least 10 months. If you're 25 or older, you can take the HPT as soon as you have your learner licence and feel ready.
How do I book the HPT?
Book online through the Service NSW website or in person at a Service NSW centre. You'll need your licence number (or Photo Card / customer number) and payment. Bring your learner licence and proof of identity on test day.
What happens if I fail the HPT?
Nothing happens to your learner licence — you simply book again and pay the $58 fee for another attempt. There's no limit on the number of attempts. Failing doesn't reset your logged driving hours or count against your practical driving test.
How long is the HPT valid after I pass?
After passing the HPT you must pass the practical Driving Test within 15 months. If you don't, you'll need to sit (and pay for) the HPT again.
