The Hazard Perception Test sits in the middle of the NSW graduated licensing pathway, and its timing rules trip up more people than the test itself. Here’s when you can take it, when you should take it, and the expiry rule that can force you to pay for it twice.

Who can take the HPT, and when

• Under 25: you must have held your NSW learner licence for at least 10 months before you can sit the HPT. Since you need 12 months on your Ls before the practical driving test anyway, the 10-month mark is the earliest sensible booking point.
• 25 or older: you can take the HPT as soon as you have your learner licence and feel ready — no waiting period.

Either way, you must hold a current NSW learner licence to book.

Where it fits in the licence pathway

1. Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) → gets you your learner licence
2. 10+ months of supervised driving (under 25) with your logbook hours
3. Hazard Perception Test → unlocks booking the practical test
4. Practical Driving Test → P1 (red Ps)

The 15-month rule that catches people out

An HPT pass is not forever: you must pass the practical Driving Test within 15 months of passing the HPT. Let it lapse and you’re back to square one — rebooking and repaying for the HPT before you can attempt the practical again.

The practical trap: if you sit the HPT at exactly 10 months on your Ls “to get it out of the way”, your 15-month clock starts ticking while you still need 2 more months of logbook hours just to be eligible for the practical. That’s usually fine — but if driving test wait times blow out in your area or you postpone a few times, the window can close. Book the HPT when you’re genuinely on track for the practical, not just when you become eligible.

Booking logistics (2026)

• Book: online via Service NSW or at any service centre
• Cost: $58 per attempt (fee current from 1 July 2026)
• Bring: your learner licence and proof of identity
• Format: 2 practice clips, then 15 scored video clips on a touchscreen
• Result: immediate, and unlimited retakes if needed (each with a new fee)

Use the waiting period well
